Henry invaded England in June 1399 with a small force that quickly grew in numbers. Claiming initially that his goal was only to reclaim his patrimony, it soon became clear that he intended to claim the throne for himself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><br \/>\n\u201cMy gracious lord, I come but for mine own.\u201d<br \/>\nHenry Bolingbroke, The Tragedy of King Richard II, Shakespeare, 1597, Act 3, Scene 3<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><br \/>\n\u201cHe asketh nought but that is His.\u201d<br \/>\nChristmas Carol: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twmarsh.net\/music\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Now-may-we-singen-as-it-is.pdf\">Now May We Singen as it Is<\/a>, Trinity Roll, 1420<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The Trinity Roll is a collection of carols including \u201cDeo Gracias Anglia\u201d, the Agincourt Carol. It is a scroll of parchment housed in Trinity College, Cambridge (Manuscript O.3.58). <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">It was written about 1420, the year that King Henry concluded the Treaty of Troyes and became regent and heir apparent to the French throne, and then married Catherine of Valois. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cDeo Gracias Anglia\u201d is obviously written to praise the King. Was \u201cNow May We Singen as it Is\u201d also written to praise the King\u2019s father Henry IV by making a comparison to Christ? The carol begins:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">This babe to us that now is born,<br \/>\nWonderful works He hath ywrought,<br \/>\nHe would not lose what was forlorn,<br \/>\nBut boldly again it bought;<br \/>\nAnd thus it is,<br \/>\nFor sooth I wis,<br \/>\nHe asketh nought but that is His.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">And later: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">His ransom for us hath ypaid.<br \/>\nGood reason have we to be His.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">So, the carol says directly that Christ ransomed us so we should serve him. Since He has already paid the price, \u201cHe asketh nought but that is His.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The story of Henry Bolingbroke coming for what already belonged to him was well enough known 200 years later that it was included in the play. Wouldn\u2019t it have been known 20 years later? Was this such a common phrase and concept that two similar references in 20 years is unsurprising, or is the lyricist intentionally echoing the famous story about the King\u2019s father?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I don\u2019t think we have enough information to prove it either way, but it is interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1399, after John of Gaunt died, the king disinherited Gaunt&#8217;s son, Henry of Bolingbroke, who had previously been exiled.
